Velykyi Potomkin Island is a small uninhabited island located in the Black Sea, about 35 kilometers southwest of the city of Odessa in Ukraine. The island is also known as Dovhyi Island or Potyomkin Island and is a part of the Tendra Natural Park. The island is about one kilometer long and 600 meters wide and has an elevation of 6 meters above sea level.
The island is named after Grigory Potemkin, a prominent Russian statesman and military leader who lived during the 18th century. It is believed that Potemkin used the island as a place to rest during his military campaigns.
Velykyi Potomkin Island is known for its unique flora and fauna, as it is home to a number of rare species of birds and plants. The island is also an important nesting site for sea turtles, and visitors to the island are prohibited during the nesting season.
Access to the island is restricted, and visitors need a special permit from the Ukrainian government to visit. However, the surrounding waters are popular among divers, who come to explore the diverse underwater world and shipwrecks in the area.
